How Concrete Coring Works

Perfect round holes through slabs and walls — the method behind every plumbing, electrical and HVAC penetration.

01Diamond core drilling

A core drill is a hollow, diamond-tipped cylindrical bit that grinds a ring into the concrete, leaving a smooth round hole and a solid "core" that is removed. Rigs anchor to the surface for stability, which is what makes cored holes so clean and accurately placed.

02What coring is used for

Plumbing stacks and drains, electrical conduit, HVAC and mechanical penetrations, anchor bolts, railings, and test samples. Diameters range from small conduit holes to large-diameter cores for pipes and ductwork.

03Before the drill spins

Professional coring starts with locating what is inside the slab — scanning for rebar and utilities — then marking, anchoring and drilling with water cooling for dust control. The result: a precise penetration with no cracking or blowout around the edges.
